P0741: Torque Converter Clutch Performance or Stuck Off
The torque converter lockup clutch isn't engaging properly or is slipping, often from valve-body/solenoid issues or degraded transmission fluid.
P0741 on the Mercedes Sprinter VS30 means the torque converter clutch (TCC) isn't performing as commanded — it's slipping or not locking up. The TCC mechanically links the engine to the transmission at cruise to eliminate converter slip and improve efficiency. When it can't hold lockup, the ECU/TCM sets P0741. Common causes are a sticking lockup solenoid or valve-body issue, degraded or low transmission fluid, or wear in the torque converter itself. You may notice slipping RPM at steady cruise, shudder, or reduced fuel economy. Start with transmission fluid level/condition and a service, then test the solenoid and valve body before considering converter replacement.
- Torque converter lockup clutch malfunction.
- RPM flares/slips at steady cruise instead of holding lockup
- Shudder or vibration around lockup speeds
- Reduced fuel economy
- Check engine light (often with P0700)
- Transmission running hotter than normal
- Sticking TCC lockup solenoid or valve-body fault
- Low or degraded/overheated transmission fluid
- Worn torque converter clutch
- Conductor plate / internal wiring fault
- Hydraulic pressure control issue in the transmission
- 1Scan all modules; note P0700 and other companion TCM codes stored with P0741.
- 2Check transmission fluid level and condition (burnt, dark, low).
- 3Read live data: monitor TCC slip/lockup status vs. command at cruise.
- 4Perform a transmission fluid and filter service if fluid is degraded.
- 5Test the lockup solenoid and valve-body operation.
- 6If solenoid/valve body and fluid are good but the clutch still slips, the torque converter likely needs replacement.
- 1Service the transmission fluid and filter if degraded.
- 2Replace a failing shift solenoid or repair the valve body.
- 3Replace a faulty speed sensor.
- 4Replace the conductor plate if internally faulty.
- 5Rebuild or replace the torque converter if the lockup clutch is worn.
- Transmission fluid + filter service kit~$150–$350
- Lockup/shift solenoid or conductor plate~$150–$600
- Torque converter~$400–$900 part if converter failed
