P0524 on the Mercedes Sprinter VS30 is one of the most serious codes you can see: the ECU measured engine oil pressure below the safe threshold. Low oil pressure starves bearings and moving parts of lubrication and can destroy the OM642 engine in minutes. The first priority is to verify whether the pressure is genuinely low or whether a sensor is lying. Check the actual oil level and condition immediately. Common real causes include low oil level, a worn oil pump, a clogged pickup/oil filter, excessive bearing wear, or the wrong-viscosity oil. Common false causes are a faulty oil pressure sensor or wiring. If oil pressure is truly low, do not drive the van. Confirm with a mechanical gauge before running the engine further.

  • If the mechanical gauge confirms adequate pressure, replace the faulty oil pressure sensor/wiring.
  • If pressure is truly low, inspect for clogged pickup/filter, check oil pump operation, and assess bearing wear.
  • Do not return the van to service until verified oil pressure is within spec.
  • Repair corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors.
  • Clean and tighten poor ground connections.
  • Replace the failed sensor or actuator in the affected circuit.
  • Replace a weak battery or repair the charging system for voltage faults.

Can I drive with P0524?
